Relationship with ICMA

ICMA-RC is a non-profit, independent financial services organization governed by an independent board of directors. ICMA-RC's sole mission is to help public sector employees build retirement security.

The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create excellence in local governance by developing and fostering professional management to build better communities. 

ICMA-RC and ICMA are two separate organizations and ICMA-RC does not influence or endorse ICMA policies.

ICMA-RC provides retirement plans and related services for more than a million public sector participant accounts. The corporation was organized as an independent 501(c)(3) organization in 1972 with the assistance of a Ford Foundation grant. We were created to provide portable retirement benefits for city and county managers, enabling accumulated retirement assets to be transferred between employers.

ICMA-RC maintains a license agreement with ICMA that allows ICMA-RC to use the association's name in connection with its core activities of offering retirement plans, products, and services to state and local governmental employers and their employees. In 2013, under the license agreement, ICMA-RC paid $400,469.79 to ICMA's corporate account.
