Final Step - Take Action

You have in your hand the final list, what now? The list that you compiled shows which funds to invest in and how much. Simply contact your plan sponsor or access your account through the phone or, here, on the web. Changing your current balances to match your ideal portfolio is easy. Simply select Rebalance to Multiple Funds from the Transactions | Fund Transfers menu. When you have changed your current balance remember also to update your future allocations.

A Last Word About Predicting the Future

Remember when choosing a fund that all the statistics are based on past performance of the fund. No one can tell you what will happen in the future. That is why the consistency of the fund management is so important. Ask yourself 'Is the fund well managed?' A well-managed fund will have a clear objective and a consistent approach to meeting that objective. Consistency is key when investing for the future.

Here are some questions to ask when assessing a mutual fund:

  • Does the fund have a clearly stated objective and strategy (method for meeting the objective)?
  • Does the objective fit your needs for this fund?
  • How long has the manager been at the fund?
  • Does the fund company have a track record consistent oversight of its funds?

Sudden changes in the funds objective or management should be reviewed carefully to see if they are an indication that the fund is having trouble.
